Meaning
This painting depicts a trapped black queen surrounded by white pieces - Knight, Bishop, Rooks, Pawn, Queen, and King.
Chess enthusiasts will recognize the black queen is cornered, having made her final desperate move to defend her king while attacking the white king. One more move from the white queen ends the game - black loses.
The positioning and overwhelming number of white pieces reflect my muse's state of entrapment. Her eyes reveal confusion and pain. Each square symbolizes a specific event; each piece represents a social force that has cornered, restricted, or violated her.
On the surface, it's just a game. But this piece tells the story of every individual who has experienced trauma and mental strain from the people and places society pushed them toward.
In a society that glorifies falsehood, tolerates corrupt governance, accepts predatory leadership, and breeds opportunism, many destinies remain trapped in games of power, control, greed, and ambition.
Adunni, the female figure, represents humanity caught in this endless game. Every part of her blurs into the background - except her eyes, rendered in stark realism, representing pain that refuses to fade.
The artist uses the chess pieces as symbols for different fragments of society: religious organizations, politicians, institutions, workplaces, family, strangers. The black queen's struggle to protect her king mirrors the human struggle to protect one's essence and true worth.
