Should Art Be Reduced to a Mere Commodity?

Should Art Be Reduced to a Mere Commodity?

Art is as old as humanity itself. Throughout history, it has enriched societies socially, religiously, culturally and economically. It has stood the test of time, serving as a means of passing knowledge, ideas and experiences from one generation to the next.

Yet, we cannot ignore the fact that today, particularly in Europe, art has largely become a commodity. Visit several art fairs and you will find the same kinds of works, each seemingly as lifeless as the next. Where has diversity gone? What has happened to creativity? Have they somehow lost their way? Far from it! The market, major cultural institutions and political trends, among other factors, all contribute to the gradual erosion of the creativity that should bring these spaces to life.

Strange, you might say? And yet, this is a very real issue. Major institutions tend to play it safe, repeatedly promoting the same established artists or introducing new names riding on waves of short-lived popularity. Whatever happened to the joy of discovering hidden talent? Of finding gifted artists and bringing their work into the spotlight? The market is saturated with artists simply trying to find their place in the sun. How many eventually abandon their true artistic expression, losing themselves in trends that increasingly resemble one another?

Why? Quite simply, because people need to make a living, put food on the table and pay their bills. Established conventions, the need to secure sponsors, economic pressures and institutions unwilling to explore new territory all contribute to shaping a market that stifles artists and restricts their freedom. Not all artists, of course, but certainly many.

So, is art still truly art when it loses its soul and becomes generic? Any artist, deep down, will tell you: "When I create, I give something of myself. It is my soul expressing itself." And you see, that is precisely what makes an artwork unique: the authenticity of its creator, who, through the work, leaves an indelible mark of who they truly are. You may like a work or not, since taste is personal. But authenticity cannot simply be ignored.

History speaks for itself: art is an extraordinarily powerful means of expression. Have you ever seen someone burst into tears while listening to a song? Have you ever found yourself lost in thought or deeply inspired while reading a book? Have you ever stood in awe before a magnificent sculpture? How many people feel their senses calm and their minds at peace when encountering a beautiful work of art that resonates with their inner selves? The examples are endless.

So, should art be regarded as nothing more than a commodity?

Should artists continue to have their creativity silenced simply to conform to standardised expectations?

I believe each of us needs a little art around us. If not as an investment, then to bring harmony to our daily lives. For art, like a symphony, brings harmony to both our surroundings and our spirit. Isn’t that one of the reasons nature soothes us so deeply? It is, in itself, a living work of art, full of beauty and harmony.

At SoulXpression Gallery, we are committed to discovering and showcasing talent, while championing authenticity and creativity. We carefully select the artists we work with and the artworks we bring to your attention. Every piece combines technical mastery with a creative spark. Each carries a story, a reflection, a message, a source of encouragement, or simply captures a moment of happiness. We want to do things differently because we genuinely believe in authentic art.

So, come and discover our world!
